As the Saints Go Smuggling In: Relive the Night A Million Bibles Swam Ashore Off the Coast of China

Thousands of Chinese Christians lingered on the beach, the cove ahead doused in the night sky. 

They came with donkeys, motorbikes, bamboo pools, trucks – anything to carry the cargo due ashore at 9 p.m. that evening.

From a barge off the shoreline, three flickers of a flashlight glinted toward the hushed crowd. One of the Christians replied to the prearranged signal, sending three beams in return.

“I’d like to shake your hand”: The unintentional ministry of my friend Henry

His voice took extra strides to reach my ears, nasal and droning, like a playlist pitched down half a step.

“Hi, I’m Henry. What’s your name? I’d like to shake your hand.” 

Throughout my childhood, I didn’t know what to think of Henry when I’d see him at Walnut Grove Assembly of God each Sunday morning. 

“Why can’t he remember my name?” I’d ask myself.
